Tara Mühlberghuber is a cinematographer and director whose work blends intimate storytelling with a distinctive visual language. Based in Canada, she creates documentary–narrative hybrids, branded content, and short films shaped by empathy, memory, and mood—images that feel lived-in, tender, and quietly nostalgic.

Tara studied photography at Seneca at York University, Fine Art Photography at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and later Cinematography and Screenwriting at Sheridan College. She began her professional journey as a fine art photographer at the Distill Gallery in Toronto’s Distillery District before moving into product photography at Hopson Grace in Rosedale (Toronto), and later fashion photography at Lemonwood in Oakville, Ontario.

Her transition into film grew naturally from this strong visual foundation: she apprenticed with NABET 700 as a grip and later trained through the IATSE 667 camera trainee program. Since then, she has worked across film and commercial sets as a 2nd AC, 1st AC, cinematographer, and writer-director. Tara loves “painting with light,” drawing inspiration from the texture of 16mm film, the sculpted drama of hard light, and the traditions of classic cinema.

Much of Tara’s artistic voice is rooted in her childhood with her grandmother—a devoted oil painter and her closest creative companion. The imagination and playfulness they shared continue to guide her work, carried into every project as if they are still creating together.
